Coming straight from the opening of his new Cancel The Party EP, Johan Lenox’s ‘Moderation’ is a mind-bending masterpiece of sound. Its first few seconds introduce orchestral sounds, manipulated and send soaring around the stereo field. Percussive synths are quickly introduced to support Lenox’s voice, which is layered with modern R&B influences. The chorus is nostalgic and huge, setting the tone for each track to come on the release. On writing and releasing the EP, he explains: “I wrote this EP about my coming of age experience in suburban Massachusetts. I still go back there a ton, but things used to be more fun and less serious. As we're all getting older I think a lot of people my age are feeling uniquely directionless. I don't know if this is the result of personal issues or if we've been totally screwed over generationally and are never really going to arrive at adulthood.
